Thinking about becoming a sponsor?

Sponsors are the lifeblood of non-profits, and Climb Avy Aware needs sponsors to keep our work going. Although we have a tiny team of dedicated volunteers, it takes lots more than human power to analyze ice climbing routes under the ATES, rate them, and publish the findings. We need money for topo maps, avalanche path maps, and photos (especially drone photos) for every climbing route we tackle. The custom-made route and area maps will probably have to be hired out, as this is specialized and technical work best left to map professionals. Finally, website hosting, creation and maintenance is expensive, as are promotional materials.

In other countries that employ ATES ratings as a risk management tool for backcountry recreation—Canada, New Zealand and several European nations—the work is just another public service provided by the government in concert with the rest of their avalanche safety operations.

Here in Colorado, the state Department of Natural Resources, its program the Colorado Avalanche information Center, and the Colorado Department of Transportation team up to provide avalanche forecasting, monitoring, control and mitigation, which are largely paid for by taxpayers. Yet, the ATES is not a part of any of these agencies’ plans. If any particular user group, like skiers, snowmobilers, or climbers want their backcountry terrain rated under the ATES, its DIY-or-bust. As a result, the ATES has not enjoyed the widespread use here that it has in Canada and elsewhere. In Colorado, you will find some ATES-rated backcountry ski tours, but only because some guidebook authors and publishers, like Beacon’s Mike Soucy (one of our analysts and boardmembers) have been interested and knowlegable enough to do the work.

Until the State of Colorado sees fit to fund ATES work for its backcountry recreation areas, the work falls to those who choose to take it on, and it’s not cheap. Become a sponsor today, and help us continue and expand this public service.

Becoming a sponsor is easy, just click the link and pick the sponsor level that best matches your giving goal.

There are intangible benefits to sponsorship as well. By partnering with Climb Avy Aware, you are supporting and aligning yourself with a needed public service and a great project. When climbers, guides and rescuers hear about our mission, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “What a great idea! I was hoping someone would finally do this,”is something we hear a lot. You’ll build goodwill by supporting an initiative aimed at saving lives, increasing awareness, and promoting safe practices in the backcountry.
